Sandvik Tapered Button Bit Introduction

Tapered button bits are essential and core rock drilling consumables for underground mining, tunnel rock drilling and quarrying operations

Tapered button bits are essential and core rock drilling consumables for underground mining, tunnel rock drilling and quarrying operations. They are mainly used with tapered drill rods and rock drills to complete rock drilling tasks. Relying on mature material technology and structural design, Sandvik tapered button bits form a standardized and serialized product range, which adapts to different geological conditions, drilling depths and rock drill equipment, and is widely suitable for various conventional rock drilling scenarios. The bit diameter range of this series is 28 to 40 millimeters, covering the mainstream aperture requirements of engineering construction. The products are available in ballistic button and cross bit types, all of which are regrindable and reusable after reconditioning. This effectively improves the recycling rate of consumables and reduces the long-term replacement cost in construction work.

To meet different rock drilling requirements, the bits are designed with various taper angles, including 4.46°, 7°, 11° and 12°. Both long skirt and short skirt structures are available for selection according to rock hardness, drilling depth and rock drill pressure. The product range includes three basic design models for different working conditions. The first design, as shown in Figure 1, is a basic general-purpose structure, suitable for short holes within 2 meters and solid rock formations, and matched with low-pressure hammers with simple structure and low cost. The second design, as shown in Figure 2, adopts a reinforced structure with high overall stability and good wear resistance, suitable for complex rock conditions and high-pressure hammers to ensure stable drilling performance. The third design, as shown in Figure 3, features a symmetrical structure with uniform stress during operation, ensuring straight holes and suitable for standard and conventional rock drilling work.

In terms of materials and processing technology, all bits are made of high-quality special steel, heat treated under a controlled atmosphere, with hardened internal taper to improve the structural strength of the bit skirt and taper connection, minimizing the risk of skirt cracking and failure. Precision hole drilling and accurate button fitting are adopted. Equipped with new tough cemented carbide grades, the bits effectively avoid premature button breakage and damage, extend overall service life, reduce equipment downtime and replacement frequency, and ensure continuous and stable rock drilling operation.
